Deputy Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities
Prior to this appointment, she served for three years as Deputy Minister with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. As Deputy Minister of the largest ministry in the Ontario Public Service (OPS) that delivers direct services, Deborah was responsible for policing, correctional services and public safety, including the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), oversight of municipal policing, the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Ontario. Her previous positions in the OPS include: Assistant Deputy Minister of Youth Justice Services and Assistant Deputy Minister of Community and Young Offender Services. Deborah Newman also served as a Director with Human Resources and Social Development Canada, in an Interchange Canada assignment. Prior to joining the Ontario Public Service in 1987, Deborah held a number of senior management roles in correctional services in Alberta. In 2006, she was the recipient of the Amethyst Award, Ontario's premier achievement honour, as a result of leading a major transformation in the OPS. In 2008, she was recognized by the Women’s Executive Network as one of Canada’s Top 100 most powerful women in the ”public sector leaders” category. Deborah Newman holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master's degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa, and is a graduate of the Queen's University Public Executive Program. |
